James "Jeevan" Goff:
A Visionary Innovator in Solar Energy and Beyond Jeevan Goff

Born: Dallas, Texas, February 1962

James Ronald Goff—later known as Jeevan Goff—has always been a groundbreaker. From a young age, Jeevan showcased an extraordinary talent for electronics and mechanics, repairing neighbors’ appliances and even rebuilding a sports car in high school. Despite challenges and being misunderstood for his unique perspectives, Jeevan’s self-driven learning laid the foundation for a groundbreaking career.

Early Career: From Apple to Leadership

In 1980, Jeevan began his career as a technician at Apple Computer’s manufacturing plant in Dallas, Texas, where he tested and repaired Apple II computers and floppy disk drives under the management of Steve Jobs. His creativity shone through when he built a voice synthesizer circuit for his Apple computer, a project that could explain itself using a synthesized human voice.

Jeevan’s passion extended to music, where he joined the electronic dance band T-4-2 as a keyboardist, integrating his voice synthesizer into performances. This led to the band being recognized as “Best of Dallas” by the Dallas Observer. Around the same time, Jeevan honed his technical skills, becoming the lead service technician for synthesizer keyboards at Arnold & Morgan Music. By 1986, Jeevan had risen to the position of Vice President of Audio Electronics Service Center, where he managed a team of technicians and implemented a Unix-based ERP system, revolutionizing the company’s operations.

A Global Impact: From Electric Cars to Solar Villages

Jeevan’s journey took a transformative turn in 1990 during an eco-tour in Nepal, where he fell in love with the culture and the Himalayas. In 1993, he co-founded Lotus Energy Pvt. Ltd., a pioneering solar energy company in Nepal. Under his leadership, Lotus Energy installed over 40,000 solar systems in remote villages, bringing electricity to countless homes and institutions. His innovative solar-powered water pumps eliminated the need for villagers to walk miles for water, profoundly improving their quality of life.

In 2002, he co-founded Eco-Visions Pvt. Ltd., establishing electric car dealerships and charging stations in Kathmandu. One of his standout innovations was the Safa Tempo, a three-wheeled, battery-powered vehicle that evolved into a fleet of 800, replacing polluting diesel vans and helping restore the visibility of the Himalayas from Kathmandu.

Pioneering Solar Energy in Extreme Conditions

Jeevan’s expertise was tested in extreme environments, such as designing and installing an off-grid solar system for the world's highest hospital, located on Mount Everest. Despite harsh weather and altitude challenges, he successfully led a team to complete the project. He also solar-powered the world-famous Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge in Nepal, a luxury lodge previously reliant on kerosene lamps. Tasked after a catastrophic fire caused by a lamp, Jeevan’s solar system transformed the lodge, ensuring safety and sustainability.

In 2019, Jeevan joined Hudson River Solar as the in-house senior engineer and system designer. Based in Upstate New York, he has since installed hundreds of off-grid solar systems, including unique projects such as a straw-built home featured on the Discovery Channel’s Off-Grid Living and an island installation on Lake George. His innovative designs continue to save clients significant costs while promoting sustainability.

A Diverse Skill Set and Global Recognition

  • Installed over 42,000 village home systems and 2,000 institutional solar systems.

  • Presented battery system designs at SEI solar summits in California.

  • Consulted for manufacturers, influencing advancements in solar and battery technologies.

  • Designed cutting-edge systems, such as off-grid sites with wind turbines and sun-tracking solar poles, powering luxury homes.

A Life of Passion and Creativity

Jeevan’s hobbies reflect his multifaceted personality. As a teen, he apprenticed under a master craftsman restoring antique player pianos. His musical journey continued in Nepal, where he mastered classical and folk instruments, performed with royal musicians, and toured internationally with the Nepalese pop band Deepak Bajracharya.
